Dieter Weller received a Diploma in physics from University Marburg, Germany in 1982 and a Ph.D. degree in physics from University Cologne and KFA Jülich, Germany in 1985.
From 1985 to 1990 he worked at the Siemens AG Central R&D in Erlangen, Germany on magneto-optic recording materials and disks. From 1990 through 2000 he was with IBM Almaden Research in San Jose working on electronic, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of thin films and multilayers. He joined Seagate in April 2000, where he held various positions in Pittsburgh, PA and Fremont, CA as Director of Advanced Media R&D. Weller was Chief Technologist and managed Seagate’s patterned media effort. Currently he is Manager Future Magnetic Recording Media at Hitachi GST.
Dieter is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). He was Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Magnetics Society in 2004. He has served in several organizational functions from editor, program co-chair and general conference chair for the American Institute of Physics and the IEEE Magnetics Society.
He has published more than 250 scientific journal and book articles, holds 31 U.S. and International patents and has 16 published patent applications.
