Jørgen Kjems was educated in physics and chemistry at the science department at Aarhus University and received his basic training in the field of RNA chemistry, structure and function at Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University. He started to work on the molecular biology of HIV-1 virus in 1989 while a research fellow in Philip A. Sharp’s laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and by 1992 he has started his own research group at Department of Molecular and Structural Biology in Aarhus. In 1994 he was appointed as associate professor at the same place.
